Planting for People and Planet
Beyond their beauty, wildflowers are vital for biodiversity. They improve soil health, support complex ecosystems, and provide essential food and shelter for pollinators—creatures our own food systems rely on. Yet despite their importance, wildflower-rich grasslands are diminishing fast, and it’s estimated that since the 1930s the UK has lost over 97% of its wildflower meadows.
It’s this knowledge that drives our latest environmental initiative; a growing patchwork of pocket wildflower meadows, spreading across Camden. We’re expanding our Communi-Trees and Beeline Box initiatives to encompass wildflowers wherever possible, creating a growing patchwork of pocket meadows across Camden. Delivered in partnership with Think & Do, many of the estates we work on have limited access to green space, but where there’s opportunity and enthusiasm from residents, we’re keen to help bring nature back in.
Four estates in Camden now have their own wildflower meadow totalling 120 square meters, each sown with over 30 native species that will flower from May to October, year after year. These spaces are cared for by our KOKO Foresters, a growing team of young residents who are trained and employed to nurture our environmental projects.
The positive impact these interventions have is palpable. Studies show that urban greening reduces antisocial behaviour, supports health and wellbeing, and fosters social connection. We witness this firsthand through our community outreach, as residents come together, taking pride in their environment and recognising their power to shape a greener, more resilient urban landscape. Like all of our environmental initiatives, these pockets meadows are more than a response to the ecological crisis, they’re about bringing communities together and exploring the possibility of a different kind of urban future.
